The Picks

With the season over and Draft coming up Thursday I want to get my picks out there for posterity. This will be sort of a hybrid of a board and mock. It's who I would take acting as GM for each team. I'll post each prospect as they become crystallized for me. The first couple are locks so here we go.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 23, 2025 at 10:40 AM

#1 - Dallas Mavericks - Cooper Flagg No new insights here, he's the obvious consensus pick for good reasons.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 23, 2025 at 10:40 AM

#2 - San Antonio Spurs - Dylan Harper Not quite as much a lock as Cooper but he's a lock for me for sure. Only real knock that makes you think even more than a few seconds is that Rutgers probably shouldn't have been as bad as they were with a top 2 guy and another top 10 guy, but it is what it is.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 23, 2025 at 10:40 AM

#3 - Philadelphia 76ers - Jeremiah Fears Well I'm already off the rails with this pick. It's a tough one because I don't know what the Sixers are actually doing, but talent-wise I think Fears might be special enough to just say fuck it. "Something about this kid" just speaks to me.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 23, 2025 at 12:49 PM

#4 - Charlotte Hornets - Ace Bailey This is a super close call for me between Ace and the next guy coming up. I'm giving Ace the slight edge due to his age and fluidity at his size on both sides of the ball. The "big wing" is so rare but Ace might actually be one.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 23, 2025 at 8:57 PM

#5 - Utah Jazz - VJ Edgecombe VJ is the proverbial seamless fit in Utah. I fully expect him to go earlier than this, but if he was on the board, at this point he'd be coming off for sure. Hard to see him fall further than 5.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 23, 2025 at 8:57 PM

#6 - Washington Wizards - Asa Newell I was higher than consensus this whole cycle on Asa Newell whom I think is being underrated in terms of his two-way potential. Arguably the most athletic prospect this cycle. Intriguing fit potential with Coulibaly and Sarr in the front court.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 6:01 AM

#7 - New Orleans Pelicans - Thomas Sorber Hands down my favorite player in this cycle, Sorber gives me tingly feelings somewhere between Kevon Looney and Al Horford. It's possible he busts or just becomes a boring backup big but it's also possible he anchors NOP's defense for the next decade plus.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 6:07 AM

#8 - Brooklyn Nets - Kon Knueppel Rose up in my draft rankings over the course of the season. At one point I definitely had Tre Johnson higher and the lack of athleticism is a real concern, but Kon forced the issue and Brookyln would be a great landing spot for him. Ricardo Montalban approved.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 6:17 AM

#9 - Toronto Raptors - Tre Johnson You could easily argue 3-4 guys at this spot and I would have zero problems with it. In the end my thought was Tre definitely adds actual offensive talent to a roster that needs it a bit more than defense (for example, what Maluach would give you).

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 1:17 PM

#10 - Phoenix Suns - Khaman Maluach Maluach would essentially be a no-brainer for a team that needs a ton of defensive help. No need to belabor the point. I should say I'm not the biggest Maluach fan and I do have concerns that he is so bad on offense that he's unplayable. But yeah. Let's see!

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 1:47 PM

#11 - Portland Trailblazers - Derik Queen I'd like him a lot more if he could shoot, and at this point in the Draft you have to start making those kinds of bets. If he figures out the shooting and gets in better shape he looks kinda like Naz Reid. If he doesn't, he might bust.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 8:15 PM

#12 - Chicago Bulls - Jase Richardson A Giddey-Jase backcourt? Sure, why not. Welcome to the modern NBA folks! But seriously, in the vein of placing bets, this is sort of a What If special. Jase has some weird preternatural scoring talent and incredible dad genes. Good enough for me, I guess.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 8:22 PM

#13 - Atlanta Hawks - Kasparas Jakucionis Questions about shooting, athleticism, and lead guard potential notwithstanding, Kasparas is BPA at this point on my board.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 8:30 PM

#14 - San Atonio Spurs - Carter Bryant I kind of surprised myself with this pick. I almost wanted to take Danny Wolf or Walter Clayton here for shits and giggles but Bryant would land on a team that really does just need him to shoot and defend which maybe he can do.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 8:43 PM

#15 - Oklahoma City Thunder - Noa Essengue Ok, fuck you Sam Presti, you god damn genius. There's no way you pass this guy up because even you need to whiff once in a while *cough*Ousmane Dieng*cough*Poku*cough. Maybe it's Cedric Coward. But you will whiff god dammit!

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 8:55 PM

#16 - Memphis Grizzlies - Walter Clayton Jr. Believe it or not, Clayton burst on my radar the summer after his Freshman season at Iona. Shit, what am I saying, of course you believe it. Thought he was a potential "if he shoots" guy. Seems like he has surpassed that threshold, no?

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 10:51 PM

#17 - Minnesota Timberwolves - Cedric Coward For me there's really some diminishing returns starting to kick in this range of the draft. I don't see anyone that's a lock to come in as a rookie and help the TWolves "win now". Might as well open the mystery box that is Cedric Coward. FAFO FTW!

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 11:03 PM

#18 - Washington Wizards - Egor Demin Did you know his nickname is "The Big Flaw"? I kid, I kid. But..yeah, he is cool but has a big flaw. We all know what it is. I'm not even going to say it. Not. Going. To. Say. It. Wizards are building kind of a weird team anyway. I'm sure this will be fine.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 24, 2025 at 11:10 PM

#19 - Brooklyn Nets - Collin Murray-Boyles I'm pretty skeptical of this brand not to mention how bad his team was but we're well past the "BPA" phase of this Draft. Coffee Meets Bagel has the same big flaw as Demin but he's young and interesting in other ways. You're just taking shots on goal here.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 10:08 AM

#20 - Miami Heat - Rasheer Fleming "NBA body" guy who maybe turned into a shooter. If he really is a shooter, he can be a legit 3&D guy for 10 years. Would be ecstatic with that outcome here. Haute Couture!

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 10:13 AM

#21 - Utah Jazz - Adou Thiero You know how happy Steve Kerr would be if Jonathan Kuminga was Adou Thiero? Anyhoo...think he's being underrated somewhat. Top tier athlete who can slash and defend. I'm not gonna say he'll ever shoot but can still be pretty useful for the right team.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 10:26 AM

#22 - Brooklyn Nets - Danny Wolf Nets have 5 first round picks. Taking shots on goal here. Wolf is a bit like a more modern version of David Lee. If he shoots consistently he's going to be a pretty fun backup stretch 4 or 5. Turnovers and defense are a big concern.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 10:31 AM

#23 - New Orleans Pelicans - Joan Beringer Ok *this* is truly where the Draft falls off for me. Now we are just throwing dice. I'm going to throw dice on this 18 year old big who gives me serious Wiseman vibes. You're not sold??!! I mean maybe this is a Sliding Doors moment where it goes right.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 10:48 AM

#24 - Oklahoma City Thunder - Hugo Gonzalez Let's just call this the international portion of the Draft from 23-27. I am no Euro expert but maybe one of these guys pops. Hugo seems like an above average athlete and legit wing size (6'6" bf 6'11" ws 220lbs). I admit only watching highlights!

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 2:44 PM

#25 - Orlando Magic - Hansen Yang I watched him at the Combine just like the rest of y'all. Was impressed by his size and passing just like the rest of y'all. Wasn't impressed by the 5 minutes I watched of him in an actual Chinese league game. Just like the rest of y'all. HUGE HANDS.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 2:44 PM

#26 - Brooklyn Nets - Ben Saraf People who know know BDO. Whoops, old habits die hard. I meant to say people who know know Ben Saraf is good. He did not pop off the screen while I was watching Noa Essengue, and it seems like he can't shoot. So I guess I don't know what they know.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 2:44 PM

#27 - Brooklyn Nets - Nolan Traore Fuck'ing hell it's Brooklyn Nets on the clock again. Traore is the last of the somewhat interesting euros. He's a smaller point guard mass-wise (decent length though) who hasn't demonstrated much shooting so he'll have to just randomly develop that in the NBA.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 2:44 PM

#28 - Boston Celtics - Will Riley Riley started off the season really hot and faded somewhat, but at the end of the first round there's 3 Freshmen left to choose from (the other two are up next) and I'd lean Riley over those. You could also argue for Riley ahead of the previous 5 internationals.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 3:00 PM

#29 - Phoenix Suns - Liam McNeeley McNeeley has a rep for shooting and he didn't shoot well but given college samples if that was just bad luck, maybe he's closer to a Lottery pick than second round. Or maybe he's a Lottery pick regardless, just not for me. Didn't or doesn't do much else.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 3:00 PM

#30 - Los Angeles Clippers - Drake Powell With the Clippers luck they'd draft Drake Powell only to trade him on draft night and in 3 years he'll become an All-Star somewhere. Having said that they also drafted Jerome Robinson with the 13th pick once upon a time. I'm not sure Powell is better.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 3:00 PM

#31 - Minnesota Timberwolves - Bogoljub Marković A mystery box international. Seems reminiscent of Poku.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 3:42 PM

#32 - Boston Celtics - RJ Luis Jr. Seems like a decent athlete and has good wing length although he looks relatively slight. Reminds me a bit of Lindy Waters.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 3:45 PM

#33 - Charlotte Hornets - Nique Clifford Short for Monique obviously. Highest ranked senior on my board in terms of stats. At this point on my board I'm mostly just aiming for the most productive older wings and guards followed by bigs and smaller guards with a couple exceptions sprinkled in.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 3:49 PM

#34 - Charlotte Hornets - John Tonje I actually feel this dude. I doubt that his slashing and foul merchant business thrives at the next level but guys who can dribble, pass, and shoot are always potentially valuable. Based on mocks I've seen he seems underrated.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 3:52 PM

#35 - Philadelphia 76ers - Max Shulga Feels in the vein of someone Steve Kerr would love and Warriors fans would hate, especially if he's on a two-way deal and gets more minutes than Moses Moody. Was that too much sharing? There's some cool stuff here, not sure he's a good enough athlete.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 3:55 PM

#36 - Brooklyn Nets - Javon Small Another Nets pick. I don't know who they're picking for here, but I always liked Javon Small. He's Small but he's a really good athlete and good basketball player. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he carves out a backup point guard role.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 3:59 PM

#37 - Detroit Pistons - Kam Jones Oh, this worked out perfectly. A guy named Kam in the Motor City. Unfortunately he moves more like an F-150 than a Corvette, but he's always been on my radar as "skilled ball handler guy". 0 dunks hurts my soul though ngl.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:03 PM

#38 - San Antonio Spurs - Brice Williams Plausibly a rotation NBA guard/wing at some point. That's about all I got.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:08 PM

#39 - Toronto Raptors - Micah Peavy Very athletic wing who can be a pest on both sides of the ball (albeit short arms), but in watching him quite a bit this season I always came away a bit underwhelmed or frustrated thinking he's a bit "wild" and undisciplined. Still potentially interesting.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:11 PM

#40 - Washington Wizards - Tamar Bates Not really a productive stats guy, kind of boring, but checks a lot of boxes. Good size (6'10" ws), athletic, possibly an elite shooter. You're just looking for NBA players here and he could be one!

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:17 PM

#41 - Golden State Warriors - Chaz Lanier You're hoping this guy is a "bench shooter". Buddy Hield-ish-lite? Chaz at Chase?

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:20 PM

#42 - Sacramento Kings - Koby Brea I've been following Brea for a few years now. Literally always thought the same thing. Man he can shoot but can he literally do even one other thing on the court? I'm not sure. Seriously. But man he can shoot! Maybe it's enough.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:22 PM

#43 - Utah Jazz - Jamir Watkins NBA body that needs to develop his shooting to stick at all. It's not more complicated than that.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:25 PM

#44 - Oklahoma City Thunder - Hunter Sallis Seems better than he is on a basketball court. Needs to develop the shot to have a chance.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:27 PM

#45 - Chicago Bulls - Johni Broome At this point we're taking significantly flawed players that probably just don't make it. I liked Broome since his Freshman season but he absolutely needs to shoot and even then what position does he defend? But he was so good in college, maybe he figures it out.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:30 PM

#46 - Orlando Magic - Rocco Zikarsky Sick name. Who the fuck is this guy? I don't know but he's young and big. He's probably going to be incredibly fun to make fun of if he's on your team. A one number metric is going to be named after him one day.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:32 PM

#47 - Milwaukee Bucks - Matthew Cleveland Long after the hype died, did Matthew Cleveland learn how to shoot? This dude came into college as a bit of an athletic marvel but flopped. He always had the NBA tools.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:36 PM

#48 - Memphis Grizzlies - Kobe Sanders Checks some boxes at his size but probably not a good enough athlete.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:38 PM

#49 - Cleveland Cavaliers - Ryan Nembhard Really small but definitely a great college point guard. Can he pull off some magic to translate it to the next level? I doubt it but he'll get a chance.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:40 PM

#50 - New York Knicks - Sion James "Shades of Lou Dort" they said. I didn't like Lou Dort. He was definitely way way the fuck better than I ever predicted. But that doesn't mean Sion James will be too. There's some Duke inflation here.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:43 PM

#51 - Los Angeles Clippers - Maxime Raynaud I've gotten way too enthused by a lot of guys who end up backup bigs or just GL bigs for life. I'm over it. If Raynaud or Kalkbrenner become legit NBA bigs maybe it'll be a short phase though. I will say I have liked Raynaud and Kalk for years.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:46 PM

#52 - Phoenix Suns - Ryan Kalkbrenner I really liked Kalkbrenner since his Freshman year and I am rooting for him to just be a bench big. I hope he proves this ranking wrong.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:49 PM

#53 - Utah Jazz - Vladislav Goldin Probably just another GL big for life.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:50 PM

#54 - Indiana Pacers - Yanic Konan Niederhauer Ditto! Cool built in nickname though.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:52 PM

#55 - Los Angeles Lakers - Arthur Kaluma I always hated Arthur Kaluma. This spot seems about right.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:53 PM

#57 - Memphis Grizzlies - Eric Dixon A stretch 4 that probably can't do anything else. Wait, why don't I have this guy higher?!

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:56 PM

#58 - Orlando Magic - Alijah Martin Small dude that can dunk a lot is fun. Let's draft him here!

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:57 PM

#59 - Cleveland Cavaliers - Mark Sears I like Mark Sears. Probably ends up in Europe where he wins an MVP.

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 4:59 PM

#60 - Houston Rockets - Noah Penda And we're done!

— Evan Zamir (@evanzamir.bsky.social) June 25, 2025 at 5:00 PM
